The History of West Hyattsville Baptist Church
On May 14, 1950, West Hyattsville Baptist Church was begun by the Mission Committee of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Rainer, in the form of a Sunday School which met at a residence at 5823 33rd Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland. The Sunday School continued for several months until the group was no longer able to assemble at the residence; however, many of the people continued to attend Sunday School at the Mt. Ranier Church.
On March 11, 1951, a building was rented at Ager and Jamestown Roads and a new Mission was begun, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Mt. Rainer. At that time, Dr. Paul L. Bard, Missionary of the Southern District Baptist Association was placed in charge of the Mission. By October 1951, the average Sunday school attendance was at 46 and the Worship Service averaged 27 attendees.
